Windows 7 Snipping Tool

This is a very easy-to-use tool comes in extremely handy when all you want is a section of the screen to save for later viewing or reference.

Go to START -> ALL PROGRAMS -> ACCESSORIES -> SNIPPING TOOL.

This is the programs main interface (see Fig 1).

Fig 1

When you first open the program, you will notice your screen turns a hazy white.  This is showing the area you can snip from.  You are now ready to make a screen snipping of any part of the screen you want to save.

Hold the left mouse button down as you drag from the top left corner of the area you want to copy down to the lower right hand corner, then release the mouse button.   You will know what you are snipping before you release the mouse button from the red line that outlines the area.

Once you release the mouse button, a new window will open with your screen snippet shown in it.  The tools you have to work with are in the top left cornet of this window (see Fig 2)

The tools are as follows (from left to right)

  • New (the snipping scissors)
  • Save Snip (the purple floppy disk)
  • Copy (the paper on top of paper)
  • Email Snip (the envelope with red circle) this lets you choose to email recipient or email  recipient as attachment.
  • Pen - here you have the option of Red, Blue, Black and Custom.  You have to choose the last option of customize if you want to use the custom pen, changing the color, thickness and tip.
  • Highlighter - allows you to highlight in yellow only
  • Eraser - erase anything you dont want in the snipping.
This snipping is not yet saved at the moment.  So save your document now by selecting Save Snip OR going to File -> Save As.

There are also some Options under Edit that allow the following (see Fig 3):
